Healthy hair, skin, and nails starts from the inside, with proper nutrition. Vitamins such as biotin, and folic acid have shown to support hair and nail growth.

Biotin is part of the B complex group of vitamins, which helps to produce fatty acids and convert carbohydrates into glucose that is used to produce energy.  Biotin also supports healthy skin, nail, and hair growth. Nail grows continuously, therefore it needs the right ingredients from the inside to support growth and structure. Biotin supports strong nails through its role in the production of keratin, the main protein in nails. Biotin deficiency can lead to hair loss, brittle nails and skin rash.(1)  It even may promote the growth of new hair in people who suffer from hair loss. A deficiency in biotin levels may result in hair becoming weak and coarse, making it prone to breakage.  By producing fatty acids and helping to synthesize unsaturated fats in the body, biotin may aid in providing moisture and strength to the hair shaft.(2)  Preliminary studies suggest that biotin supplements may improve thin, splitting, or brittle toe and fingernails.

In one particular case study, a woman received oral biotin supplementation. After 3 weeks, her serum and urine biotin levels were tested. New hair growth was noticed and her other symptoms were resolved as well.(3)  In another study, scanning electron microscopy was used to assess fingernail thickness and splitting.  In a group of participants who had brittle nails and received a biotin treatment, nail thickness increased by 25% and nail splitting was reduced.(4)  A follow up analysis of this study confirmed that the results suggested a positive response to daily biotin supplementation in some people with brittle nails.(5)

Folic acid, also a B vitamin (B9), is crucial for tissue growth, cellular repair and development, and healthy brain development as is essential for the production of DNA which provides the directions for cellular activity.  Hair and nails are some of the body’s fasting growing cells. Thus, maintaining adequate folic acid levels is especially important in these cells and tissues that are rapidly growing and dividing.

Biotin and folic acid are both part of the B complex vitamins which help in the process your body uses to get or make energy from the food you eat, and help to form red blood cells.

In particular, biotin assists in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Biotin is a coenzyme, meaning that it allows certain proteins carry out their function of producing energy. It is one of the agents that converts food into energy by facilitating the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates into glucose, and breaking down of proteins into amino acids.(1)

Another B vitamin, folic acid (B9), is important in proper growth and division of the body’s cells, due to its large role in producing nucleic acids (DNA & RNA) which provide instructions for cellular processes.  It also works with vitamin B12 to form healthy red blood cells (RBCs).  If you lack enough folic acid to produce fully developed RBCs, this can result in insufficient oxygen delivery throughout your body and lead to feelings of fatigue.(2)

Both biotin and folic acid are water-soluble vitamins meaning any excesses that the body does not use are excreted.(1)  Since they cannot be stored, we need biotin and folic acid in our diets every day to help our bodies’ energy production pathways and cell reproduction mechanisms to function optimally.

The vitamin most often associated with prenatal vitamins is folic acid (called folate in its natural form).  Folic acid is a B vitamin that has a very strong association with reduction of the risk of serious birth defects in women during pregnancy. Folic acid supports healthy fetal development and protects against a number of congenital malformations including neural tube defects.  Neural tube defects result in malformations of the spine, skull, and brain, when the neural tube fails to close completely.  Since the neural tube forms very early in development often before the mother knows she is pregnant, it is recommended that women begin a folic acid regimen before becoming pregnant.  Currently, about half of pregnancies in the US are unplanned, so it is also recommended that all women of childbearing age who could become pregnant take 400 mcg of folic acid daily, regardless of if they intend on having a child or not.(1,2)  Folic acid deficiency during pregnancy may also increase the risk of preterm delivery, low birth weight and other pregnancy complications.  It also has been shown to reduce the risk of congenital heart defects in newborns.(2)

Another vitamin that plays a role in proper pregnancy nutrition is biotin.  Like folic acid, biotin is also a B vitamin, and another name for it is vitamin B7.  Biotin, is involved in the metabolism of both fat and sugar, and is essential for energy production and for the synthesis of fatty acids. Biotin is necessary for an enzyme called acetyl Co-A carboxylase to function correctly. This enzyme puts together the building blocks for the body’s production of fat.(3) Fat production is critical for all cells in the body since the membranes of all cells must contain the correct fat components to function regularly.
