Pantesin® Pantethine is a derivative of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5). Pantothenic acid is a water-soluble vitamin that helps to synthesize Coenzyme-A (CoA). Pantethine acts by inhibiting the enzymes acetyl-CoA carboxylase and HMG-CoA reductase, thus modifying lipoprotein metabolism. Pantesin forms the reactive component of Coenzyme-A. CoA allows for acetate oxidation, which allows the body to produce energy. CoA also helps to breakdown long fatty acid chains. Fatty acid metabolism is important in managing cholesterol, triglyceride and blood lipid levels. Pantesin Pantethine increases CoA levels in cells and favorably modifies lipoprotein metabolism. These activities help to maintain cholesterol levels within the normal range and decrease cardiovascular disease risk.(1)
A triple-blinded, placebo controlled clinical study involving Pantesin Pantethine was conducted in 24 healthy subjects who were given Pantesin or placebo for sixteen weeks. All participants in the study were required to follow the Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC) diet for four weeks before the study and during the study. The TLC diet helps to lower cholesterol. Pantesin was given at a dose of 600 mg/day from weeks 1-8 and 900 mg/day from weeks 9-16. All participants reported a decrease in LDL cholesterol levels and in total cholesterol levels due to the Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes diet. The subjects that took Pantesin Pantethine showed an 11% decline in LDL cholesterol and a 6% decline in total cholesterol compared to the placebo group.(2) The recommended daily effective dose is 600-900mg for cardiovascular health.
