It has a low Glycemic Index and delivers a PDCAAS value of 0.68 and 35% protein content. Flaxseed provides a complete source of protein. It is an all natural powder packed with nutrients such as Omega 3, dietary fibers, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Flaxseeds are rich in Linoleic Acid (Omega 3). Research suggests that plant omega-3s can have beneficial effects on cardiovascular health and anti- inflammatory actions(2). The      anti-inflammatory effect of omega-3’s can be useful in preventing and slowing diseases. Studies show that flaxseed omega-3s help prevent hardening of the arteries and keep plaque from being deposited in the arteries.(3)

Flaxseeds also play an important role in regulating blood pressure and cholesterol levels. They lower total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure. LDL or “bad” cholesterol has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, obesity and diabetes.

Flaxseeds have concentrated amounts of  lignans  which have antioxidant properties. Lignans are phytochemicals which have been linked to reduce the risk of breast and prostate cancers.

A test tube study, published in “Anticancer Research” in 2010, resulted that exposing high levels of lignans causes breast cancer cells to decrease the amount of estrogen receptors in the cell. This can prevent breast cancer cells from responding to estrogen and slow cancer growth. (1)

Flaxseed can help lower elevated triglyceride levels and blood pressure levels for improved heart health.(2) A clinical study conducted by Harokopio University and Laiko Hospital in Athens, involved 59 middle-aged men with abnormal blood lipid levels. The men were separated into two groups, one group received omega-3-ALA-rich flaxseed supplements or omega-6 linoleic acid-rich safflower oil supplements for twelve weeks. At the end of twelve weeks, the men that received the omega-3-ALA-rich flaxseed supplements showed greater reduced blood pressure levels.(2)
