Pycnogenol® (pic-noj-en-all) is derived from a pine bark found in the south of France.  It has been shown to improve muscle oxygenation; and reduce muscle cramping, and pain for increased endurance.  When taken daily, Pycnogenol® can promote joint mobility, flexibility, and lower inflammation to help reduce joint pain. A potent antioxidant, Pycnogenol® may diminish spots and discoloration resulting in bright, healthy skin. Studies show Pycnogenol® can help skin with uneven pigmentation, typically seen on facial areas with high sun exposure.

Pycnogenol® is a mixture of bioflavonoids derived from the bark of the French maritime pine tree.

With age, the cartilage cushion lining of our joints wears down, which can cause trauma and inflammation in the articular tissue that connects bones and joints. This inflammation usually results in pain, and reduced joint mobility.  In multiple studies, Pycnogenol® was shown to inhibit local inflammation in articular tissues in arthritis, thus lowering joint pain.(1)

Pycnogenol® is helpful in improving endurance in athletes, as it has been shown to increase nitric oxide synthesis, which is the key mediator signaling dilation of blood vessels to ensure satisfactory blood flow. Improved blood circulation provides oxygen and nutrients to workout-fatigued muscles, and reduces lactic acid buildup during exercise, resulting in decreased muscle soreness and improved recovery.  This can also be helpful in preventing injuries, shin splints, and leg cramps.(2)

Overexposure of skin to sunlight can have negative effects. It can lead to hyperpigmentation, discoloration, and skin aging.  All of these problems can be counteracted by antioxidants.  Pycnogenol® is a key antioxidant that exhibits anti-inflammatory properties(1). It is a plant extract derived from the bark of the French maritime pine tree which grows exclusively along the coast of southwestern France. Pycnogenol® inhibits melanogenesis, (the formation of the pigment melanin, responsible for skin color) lowering skin pigmentation intensity so the skin is evenly toned. It has favorable effects on uneven pigmentation of skin typically seen on facial areas with high sun exposure(2).

A clinical study demonstrated that Pycnogenol® has skin lightening properties, on over-pigmented brown spots and age spots. Another study showed that oral supplementation of Pycnogenol® for one month reduced the areas affected with hyper-pigmentation by 37% and the average pigmentation intensity of the women participating was lowered by about 22%. The skin became lighter as well, as the density of pigment decreased (2).

Pycnogenol® is a safe and effective way to help achieve fair skin free of the dark spots or patches, without any side-effects.  Pycnogenol®  can also improve skin elasticity and collagen renewal, while providing potent antioxidants to brighten skin(3).
